Thank you for your interest in Torquay Girls’ Grammar School. We have been educating bright girls from Devon for more than one hundred years. The outcomes for girls who come here are excellent, our academic results put us in the top 20 state girls' schools nationally, our last Ofsted inspection rated us outstanding in all categories and our students go to top universities. Our vision is to provide an environment where girls can fulfil their academic potential, develop personally, and contribute positively to society.
During their time with us the girls develop skills such as resilience, collaboration and concentration so that they are well prepared for the future. Read More

In lessons the girls will be challenged to think for themselves, to take risks, and to be creative. The many extra-curricular opportunities cement the skills we nurture. This could be by being involved in the multiple clubs, teams or events or in the 150 plus trips we provide. Trips locally to the Marine Aquarium or Eden project. Trips nationally such as to the Old Bailey or Globe theatre. International trips which have seen our girls ride horses across Mongolia, visit art museums in New York, scuba dive in Cuba and climb to the top of Mount Kenya. As well as all this we have our very own residential centre in Brittany where all students visit to learn French culture, develop skills and have a lot of fun.

We are high achieving and proud of it; we are not afraid to celebrate the elite whether in the sphere of academia, sport or the arts. However, because we know that students work better when they are happy and relaxed, we also have an enormous amount of fun. Our strong house culture means that students have weekly opportunities to be involved in activities and competitions. Throughout the year we have whole school events like our sponsored walk back from Brixham, the House Shout where house students and staff sing a song to the rest of the school, and Passion day where the students can choose to take part in over 50 activities which are the passions of the staff. These range from beekeeping to barn dancing and from skincare to salsa.

We are proud of our pastoral system where, as a smaller school, we get to know all our students well and staff can respond quickly and efficiently to ensure that girls feel happy and secure.

We believe that being a single sex school enables us to focus on the style of learning and particularly the social environment in which girls feel most comfortable. They are not embarrassed to speak out, take part or hold strong views. They are enthusiastic about taking on responsibilities and few suffer from “teenage cynicism” about being keen or clever: on the contrary, they are full of enthusiasm for a great many things – including school! They want us to know all about their achievements and their lives outside school.

We have worked tirelessly to provide the best facilities for learning possible. In recent years the addition of many new buildings such as our state of the art Drama & Music block, our new Sixth Form building and our Astropitch and new Sports Hall assist us in providing the best learning environment possible. As the only state, selective girls school in the area we believe that this is a very special and unique place in which to learn. Students at TGGS can achieve anything they desire - the opportunities are here for the taking.

If I had to sum up the school in two words I would say it was both challenging and caring. We challenge the girls to reach their considerable personal and academic potential. At the same time we care for them and we encourage them to care about others.

So we welcome your interest in our school and encourage you to gather further information through our website, prospectus, open days and tours.
I wish you and your daughter every success,

Dr Nick Smith
