A visit to The Met Office - by Jessica G and Shannel F

We arrived at the Met Office on the Friday, to which we unpacked our clothes and set up our tents. We went down for dinner, which we had pasta bake, and if you wanted to eat any of your snacks as well.

We joined in in many activities, and we were divided into groups. We were in team Blizzard. We were lucky, as we got to see the Super Computer through a glass window.

We also learnt about wind and how the wind travels from a high-pressured area to a low pressured area. We went on to look at different cloud types, and how hot air rises. To prove this, we did an experiment with two bottles of water. One had a hot, red liquid in, and the other tap water. We put the necks of the bottles on top of each other- the tap water on the bottom. We used masking tape to secure them, and then we flipped the bottles over- the tap water on the top. We then saw how the hot, red liquid rose up through the tap water.

We did an experiment with tennis balls- to show how to predict. There was a ramp over the Atlantic Ocean, and we released tennis balls on it- the tennis balls represented a storm. They would then go anywhere over Europe. In the end, there was about a twenty percent chance of it landing on the UK, twenty percent chance of it landing in France, and about sixty percent chance of it landing near Germany. We rolled a final tennis ball to see where the storm would go, and it ended up in the UK, even though there was less of a chance of it landing there.

Afterwards, we went back to the conference room, which was where our tents were. We were read a bedtime story of how the world would look if we did something to stop global warming, and if we didn’t do something to stop global warming, and the difference was phenomenal!

Day two of the Met Office is filled with fun activities and you get an extraordinary inside look in what goes in at the Met Office. You will begin your day by waking up in one of the Conference rooms, at around 7:00 to get ready to have breakfast and to start some fun activities. Each activity is interactive and entertaining, and you learn something new and intriguing every time! Activities include: on how the weather affects where we live/choose to live, satellites in space, how the Met Office gets the weather forecast and even having the chance to see what it’s like to present the weather!

At the Met Office each activity informs you in a unique and new way.

Some more things that you might come across during your stay at the Met Office are: Learning about different types of clouds and how they’re formed, taking part in enjoyable activities to learn about the scale that meteorologists use to get the weather for each different part of the country, and even being able to take an inside look of people gathering information for channels such as ITV!

The Met Office is a grand place with lots of things to do, and if you get the opportunity to visit the Met Office here is a rough idea of what your day might look like.

  1. Waking up- there are toilets in which you can wash your face and brush your teeth, however you won’t have access to take showers.
  2. Then once everyone is ready, everybody then proceeds to head to the dining area to have breakfast which is provided for you, for breakfast you are given the option with a variety of cereals.
  3. The rest of the day will mainly be activity based, however there will be some snacks breaks where you eat food that you previously brought with you.

Music: At the Met Office, music is not permitted while you are at the conference room, however not much time will be spent in the conference room anyway.

Everyone at the Met Office is really nice, and during activities they make sure everyone is enjoying themselves at all times! It’s also important, though, to not be too loud when switching activities as there might be people working!

The Met Office trip is one you don’t want to miss, and if you get the opportunity to go I’m sure you’ll love it!
