The Restoration Project

Fulfilment

We gazed at what we saw,
Amazed
that such a thing -
Beyond our wildest dreams -
Had come to be
concrete reality.
Pure whiteness; strong white lines;
Converging distance;
Resistance
to all storm and fury.
So massive and so fine!
But in no modern town,
No cluttered housing scheme
Our dream
arose to fulness.

Springy turf
and sweeping skies
delight our eyes.
But we must waken,
Surely, soon
Be softly shaken
from a dream.
Some day will find us
wandering,
sadly pondering,
with puzzled brows
and vacant stare,
Our longed for castle
vanished in the air.

Poem by Sheila Jackson (VI Form Student) on the opening of the new Torquay Grammar School for Girls building in 1939

Our main building is a testament to the builders of the day. Unfortunately, that day was in 1939, and after 80 years of teenage wear and tear, it needs restoring. Parts of it are crumbling, parts of it are mouldy, parts of it are absent (no carpet) and parts of it are leaking. Although the government do not deem this sufficiently worthy of funding, we do, so we intend to raise the money required ourselves - to restore our beloved building to its former glory and safeguard it for the future.

We need to raise £100,000 to refurbish corridors, floors, doors, walls and roofs. We will continue to apply for external funding, but one of the other ways that we hope to raise some of the money is through Sponsorship & Naming Opportunities.

We invite anyone who would like to have a lasting legacy at the school to contribute through sponsoring part of our site or naming an area of the school - for themselves, a group, or in memorandum.

£100 • Sponsor a Pillar
Sponsors names will be etched on a plaque and placed on one of the 100 pillars in the old building.

£250 • Name a Classroom
If you had memorable lessons in a favourite classroom as a teacher or student, have it named with a plaque on the door.

£500 • Name a Studio
Do you have a passion for music or drama? One of our four studios could be named after you!

£1000 • Lecture Theatre   Naming offer received - no longer available
Used by all students, staff and our many external speakers as a key academic learning environment, this is a highly visible area of our site.

£2500 • The Triangle
At the heart of the school and overlooked by all, this popular green recreational space is available to be named.

£5000 • The Old Hall   Naming offer received - no longer available
The big one. Countless plays, assemblies, reunions and prize givings have taken place in here over the past 80 years. Its name will live on the in the lexicon of our school for generations to come.

Donations can be made as a single payment, or paid in 12 monthly instalments. We understand that namings are very personal and will work with individuals or family members to ensure any such dedications are in keeping with the interests or passions of those concerned.
