Welcome to our International Students

We are very pleased to welcome our visiting international students to TGGS. Mainly from Europe, they will be with us for the next two terms.

We feel that this is hugely beneficial for all of our students in promoting acceptance and understanding whilst helping them all to develop as ‘global citizens’. Students are able to share ideas with each other, learn about different cultures, and speak new languages whilst forming strong friendships that will last a lifetime. Our Sixth Form is a more cosmopolitan and vibrant place because they are with us - we're excited to have them join our TGGS community.

Christmas Science Lecture a storming success!

On Tuesday, 30th November, an enthralled audience of 102 students and parents attended the first annual Christmas Science Lecture at Torquay Girls' Grammar School. The talk, by Professor Michael Benton (Professor of Vertebrate Palaeontology at the University of Bristol), was on "The Permian-Triassic hyperthermal crisis: how heat kills" - and Professor Benton was able to show the fascinated audience how we already know what the dangers are of a warming climate, as this has happened many times in the past, with the most extreme of these being at the Permian-Triassic boundary.

Comments from parents who attended the talk included "Fantastic talk, thanks, girls enjoyed it and looking forward to the next one", and "Thank you for organising this evening's talk. It was fascinating, and an amazing opportunity for the children (and adults) to hear from an expert in their field."

Head of Geology, Gordon Neighbour, said "We are deeply indebted to Professor Benton for giving up his time for our students, and showing them the science behind the headlines...". After such a successful event it is intended that there will be a TGGS Christmas Science Lecture held annually, so if you missed it, look out for next year's event!

Ivy League Future for Georgie Scoot

We are very pleased to announce that Georgie Scoot, Year 13, has been awarded a full scholarship to Princeton University in the US. Located just outside New York City, Princeton is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the United States, tracing its history to before the American Revolution.

Mr J Gregory, who supported Georgie’s successful application on behalf of TGGS, was naturally delighted. He commented that “Whilst Georgie is an elite national athlete of huge potential, she actually gained this full scholarship because of the breadth of her extra-curricular talent, her long-term academic excellence and her leadership potential. She is an amazingly talented student but an even better person. She will thrive and encourage others to do the same’.

With lots of reasons to be excited for the future, Georgie said she was most looking forward to being able to undertake her sports training alongside her academic work, all in one place.

Headteacher, Ms S Forster, said ‘We are incredibly proud of Georgie and we know she will thrive after she leaves TGGS as she has done while here. We look forward to following her journey as she progresses through her career and we hope to welcome her back to TGGS to share her stories of triumph and success with future TGGS pupils.’

Yen Li winning designer for Bentley Motors competition

Leading automotive company Bentley Motors has partnered with social mobility charity Speakers for Schools to offer virtual work experience for young people. Through its most recent work experience week, aimed at young women, Bentley Motors held a design competition for the students. The winning designer, TGGS student Yen Li, has received a 3D model of their design. The team at Bentley Motors were particularly impressed by Yen Li’s innovative approach, inventive design and ability to work quickly and with attention to detail.

On recieving the model, Yen Li commented “I would never have found work experience with Bentley Motors without Speakers for Schools and I really enjoyed learning about the business. The car design challenge was exciting and I am delighted to have won and to receive the 3D model.”

The leading car manufacturer is offering over 280 work experience opportunities throughout 2021. The most recent work experience was aimed at young women who may not have considered a career in this industry. The advantage of virtual work experience allowed students from across the UK to take part with the Crewe-based manufacturer, from Cumbria to Torquay, female students were able to gain insight into this Bentley Motors.

Since March 2020, Speakers for Schools has offered an engaging, virtual platform for young people to access eye-opening career experience. This has become all the more important as the pandemic has slowed in-person work experience opportunities and young people have been prevented from exploring new career paths or connecting directly with employers.

Mr Neighbour, Careers Leader at TGGS said “Having these opportunities through Speakers for Schools is really allowing us to show our students the world of work that exists beyond the school – I am delighted that Yen Li had such an amazing opportunity with Bentley.”

Congratulations to all our Year 11 and Year 13 students!

We would like to congratulate all of you on your results this summer. A levels were out yesterday - GCSEs to come tomorrow. Through no fault of your own, you had to take assessments during the most difficult two years of schooling in living memory. We applaud you for your efforts and resilience under these trying conditions and we congratulate you on your fantastic results - they are thoroughly deserved. We wish you well in all your future endeavours wherever that may be. It's onwards and upwards from here!

Good luck from Dr Smith and the staff at TGGS
