English Intent

Our aim is to enthuse students through our own passion for the subject, nurturing both their critical and creative skills.

Learning in English is active and lively. Students are expected to draw on their own interests and experiences to shape their responses to texts. We encourage students to be independent in their thinking and to communicate their ideas confidently, asking questions, challenging ideas and using modern technology for both research and presentation purposes.

How English is Delivered

In English, the students follow an integrated programme, addressing the three core areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening. They study a very wide range of texts, from different time periods and genres, including: prose, poetry, drama and media texts. Our choice of topics and texts reflect issues that are relevant to our students, challenging them and engaging them in debate about their world. Drama is also taught as part of the English curriculum at Key Stage 3 and is often used to explore the issues presented within GCSE texts.

Enrichment

Across all key stages, we provide opportunities that enhance our students’ experience of English; these include creative writing clubs, book groups, and outreach work with local primary schools such as the Writing Fiction for Young Children project. Public speaking has a high profile at TGGS and our students have had great success in competitions at both regional and national level. Additionally, whenever possible, we offer theatre experiences – including Box Clever and the RSC - so that students can see their set texts ‘come alive’ on the stage
