South West Secondary School of the Year 2019

Thank you for your interest in joining us here at Torquay Girls’ Grammar School.
We have been educating bright girls from Devon for over one hundred years now. The outcomes for girls who come here are excellent; our academic results place us as one of the top schools nationally for both attainment and progress. Ofsted rate us as outstanding and our students go on to top universities, apprenticeships and employment opportunities. However, these facts do not convey the real essence of our school, which is more about a way of thinking.

It is about helping bright girls to believe they can achieve anything and giving them the skills to do so. The truth is that the world is more difficult for women than it is for men, so our aim is to develop in our girls, the skills and confidence to overcome the barriers they will face.

Fundamental to this is our first aim of Personal Development - getting our girls to develop the habits that will keep them mentally & physically fit.

Our 9 Habits Project teaches them how to eat a healthy amount of the right foods, and how to involve themselves in exercise. They learn how to stay relaxed, calm, and mindful, and how to get enough quality sleep. We know our students work better when they are happy and have a sense of belonging, so we have an enormous amount of fun through our strong house culture . Students are involved in activities like our whole school sponsored walk from Brixham back to Torquay, and the House Shout where students and staff from each house sing a song to the rest of the school. Student themselves run many events, like our Top of the Form and Bake Off competitions. Our extra-curricular opportunities cement the skills we nurture through clubs, teams, and events or on the 100 plus trips that we provide annually. Trips locally to the Marine Aquarium or Eden project, trips nationally such as to the Old Bailey or Globe Theatre, and international trips which have seen our girls ride horses across Mongolia, visit art museums in New York, scuba dive in Cuba, walk across glaciers in Iceland and ride camels in India.

Being fit and healthy allows our girls to take full advantage of our excellent teachers and for us to achieve our second aim of Academic Excellence. Exam results are outstanding both at GCSE and A level, a fact reflected by our school being named the Sunday Times South-West Secondary School of the Year 2019.

We are high achieving and proud of it; we are not afraid to celebrate the elite whether in the sphere of academia, sport or the arts. We are also proud of our pastoral system where, as a smaller school, we get to know all our students well. Staff respond quickly and efficiently to ensure that girls feel happy and secure. We believe that being a single sex school enables us to focus on the style of learning, and particularly the social environment, in which girls feel most comfortable (CLICK HERE to read more about the benefits of an all girls' education). They are not embarrassed to speak out, take part or hold strong views. They are enthusiastic about taking on responsibilities and few suffer “teenage cynicism” about being keen or clever; on the contrary, they are full of enthusiasm for a great many things – including school! They want us to know all about their achievements and their lives outside school.

We have worked tirelessly to provide the best facilities for learning possible. In recent years the addition of many new buildings such as our state of the art Drama & Music block, Sixth Form building, Archive, Amphitheatre and Sports Hall assist us in providing the best learning environment possible.

As the only state, selective girls' school in the area we believe that this is a very special and unique place for girls to succeed.

I wish you and your daughter every success and encourage you to apply.

Dr Nick Smith
