2022 GCSE, AS and A Level Exam Information

UPDATE: November 2022

Further to the below, Ofqual have now published contingency arrangements for Teacher Assessed Grads if examinations are cancelled this year:

Guidance for schools, colleges and other exam centres on contingency arrangements for students entering GCSEs, AS and A levels, the Advanced Extension Award and Project qualifications in summer 2022 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

The Department for Education has recently published information about the 2022 exam series for GCSE, AS and A Levels. They have indicated that examinations are due to go ahead next summer but there will be some adaptations in light of the continuing impact of Covid 19 on education.

Please read below for more detailed information regarding the changes to the examinations in 2022 and/or follow the government link: Decisions - proposed changes to the assessment of GCSEs, AS and A levels in 2022 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

  • Students taking GCSE, AS and A level art and design and GCSE art textiles will be assessed on their portfolio only.

  • Formulae and equation sheets will be provided for GCSE mathematics (formulae), physics (equations) and combined science (equations) in the summer examinations of 2022.

  • There will be optional topics and content in GCSE English literature, history, and geography. Ofqual will require exam boards to change how they assess these subjects to reflect the expected changes to the way the subject content is assessed, as proposed in the consultation.

  • Exam boards will provide advance information about the focus of the content of the exams for all GCSE, AS and A level subjects (except GCSE English literature, history, ancient history and geography) for the summer 2022 exams. The DfE has confirmed that advance information will be provided by 7 February 2022 at the latest.

  • Centres will be allowed to deliver practical work in GCSE biology, chemistry, physics, combined science, and geology. This does not require changes to the assessment arrangements that the exam boards have in place for each of these specifications.

  • Centres will be allowed to assess the Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC) across the minimum number of practical activities required to enable students to demonstrate their competence in A level biology, chemistry, and physics.

  • Exam boards can carry out remote monitoring of centres’ application of the CPAC.

  • Ofqual has also indicated that for summer 2022 examinations, grade boundaries will be ‘based on a profile that reflects a midpoint between 2021 and pre-pandemic grading’.

As schools are not likely to receive the advance information before 7 February 2022, centres are expected to continue to teach the full specification to ensure that content is not missed out.

Contingency arrangements for summer 2022 have not yet been published as the consultation has only recently closed but you can read the proposals by following this link: Contingency arrangements - GCSE, AS, A level, Project and AEA - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

In the unlikely event of exams being cancelled, schools have been issued with draft guidance on assessing students in order to generate evidence to determine Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs). This includes setting unseen papers which are closed book and supervised under timed conditions. The year 11 and year 13 mock examinations will be administered in this way and students will only be assessed on material that they have studied at this point.

Mock examinations could be used to support Teacher Assessed Grades if examinations do not take place next year. However, it is evident that at this stage, the Department of Education fully intends examinations to take place next summer (albeit with the adaptations outlined above) as they have stated that it ‘‘is not necessary to set out proposals for the regulatory framework for the contingency arrangements at this stage’’.

We will of course update students and parents regarding the logistics of the summer examinations of 2022 whenever we receive information from the Department of Education.
