Press Release Y11 Auction

Here is a copy of the press release sent to the Torbay Herald about the Year 11 auction.

Torquay Girls Grammar School Year 11 Auction

‘Bidding wars prove a roaring success at Torquay Girls’ Grammar School end of year 11 Auction!’

A brand new upper school reward incentive at Torquay Girls’ Grammar School has proved popular with Year 11 students this academic year. Their Head of Year, Miss Stanlake, introduced the new rewards system back in September, having written to local businesses and companies all over the South West with the help of the Business Studies prefects, to ask for prizes and donations to support an end of year prize auction.

The year group welcomed the chance to earn money they could literally cash in at the end of the year to buy prizes to acknowledge and reward them for the hard work they have produced throughout the year. With the ever-increasing exam pressures on youngsters today in a high achieving setting, the rewards system was just what the students needed to provide that extra incentive to go the extra mile. Becky Stanlake commented ‘I can’t believe how generous and supportive individuals, businesses and companies have been in supporting the rewards system’. The prices exceeded the girls’ expectations and gave them a day to remember prior to going on study leave at the end of May.

Real thanks go to all the companies that generously donated for the school auction. Prizes ranged from complimentary driving lessons (Grants, First gear, Andre Hooton), free tickets to sporting experiences (Saddles and Paddles, Torquay United & Exeter City Football Club, Clip ‘n’ Climb, 2 annual memberships to Torquay Tennis Club, Clay pigeon shooting at Ashcombe Adventure), beauty vouchers (Oasis salon, Aztec Spa, The Sanctuary,  The Cut, Boudoir, Nevaeh), café and restaurant vouchers (Maisie’s, Lemon Jelly, Daisycakes, The Boathouse, Lavini, Pizza Express), tickets to local attractions (Living Coasts, The Vue Cinema, Woodlands,  Plymouth Aquarium, Kents Cavern), gym memberships (Lifestyle & Winners in Torquay) and a huge thanks must go to the Grand Hotel who donated 3 top prizes including an overnight stay for 2 people with Dinner, bed & breakfast as well as Sunday lunch for 4 people.  The overnight stay was the top bid, selling for £63 to Gemma Li in the year group.

There were eighty-five lots in total, ensuring that the girls were spoilt for choice and the bidding thrived throughout the afternoon. The auction also hosted a range of stalls with more modest prizes ensuring that no student went away empty handed. Torquay Girls’ Grammar School would like to take this opportunity to thank all the local companies and businesses who kindly donated to their auction and hope that the new reward system will be equally successful next year.
