Operating Theatre Live comes to TGGS

Torquay Girls’ Grammar school has been selected as one of the first venues in the UK to host the award-winning Operating Theatre Live National Tour. This unique and exciting opportunity is suitable for students (14 years or over) who are considering any health related career or are interested in the science of the human body.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Operating Theatre Live Tour are the UK’s only touring surgical experience offering academically rigorous educational experience matched to exam specifications. Their events secure and challenge students to explore careers in medicine and healthcare in a mission to raise engagement in STEM subjects.

This incredible, immersive operating theatre experience will give participants the opportunity to dissect real specimens led by human anatomist Samuel Piri and his team of clinicians. Sponsored by the Royal Society of Medicine, Operating Theatre Live are the UK’s only approved license holders to use all class animal by-products for educational purposes and they are bringing their tour to us here at Torquay Girls’ Grammar school on 4th May 2019 from 9am to 3pm for the main event with an optional workshop for an insight into Emergency Medicine from 4pm to 6pm. Please see below for prices:

Future Medic Ticket £69.00 (9.00am – 3.00pm) Includes scrub hire, stethoscope hire, full PPE, 7 workshops and lunch

Future Surgeon £139.00 (9.00am – 6.00pm) Includes scrub hire, stethoscope hire, full PPE, 8 workshops, lunch and hot evening meal

During this unique opportunity, your child will be taking on the role of a trauma doctor bringing the systems of the human body alive through dissections.

As quoted by Samuel Piri himself:

"I personally write the academic content and produce all of the activities myself. My team and I guarantee you a breath-taking, unforgettable trip through the human body like never before. Each student will leave stretched and challenged having made measurable progress against the GCSE and A Level science specification.
Samuel Piri (Anatomist, Teacher and Programme Director)

Please book up as soon as possible as there are a very limited number of tickets for this exclusive event – and it is going to be opened to all schools within a 20 mile radius of the school, so demand will be exceptional.

TGGS Sixth Form ranks in Top 5%

We've recieved our "Alps" data and we are very pleased to announce that we are now in the TOP 5% of schools nationally for A-Level progress (compared to the A Level outcomes of 2,817 schools and colleges in the UK).

Well done to all our students, and a huge thank you to our teachers and support staff for their hard work in helping make these results possible.

Professor Iain Stewart talks earthquakes...

GCSE and A Level geographers had a very informative talk on earthquake risk from Professor Iain Stewart of BBC fame, presenter of documentaries such as Power of the Planet and Rise of the Continents. The talk was held at Torquay Boys Grammar School and was organised by our local Geographical Association. It was nice to be reminded of the importance geographers will make to the future of the planet and its viability. Geographers - the world needs you!

Shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child

Thank you to all our Sixth Form students who got involved in this year's Operation Christmas Child. 38 Shoebox gifts were contributed and delivered Central Church in Torquay, destined for children living in poverty in Romania. Well done to forms 12.2 and 12.6 who brought in the most boxes collectively.

BEST EVER A Level Results!

This year’s A Level results are the highest in our school’s history, and some of the best in the country for a state school.  A highly impressive 82% of grades were awarded at A* - B with 32% of  students achieving at least three A grades.

Head of Careers, Mr Neighbour, confirmed that 93% of students have secured places at their first choice university. This includes all 8 medical students who, having followed the school’s Medical Occupations Programme, attained coveted places at medical schools. 62.5% of students will go on to the prestigious Russell Group.

Liberty Palmer achieved four A* grades alongside being a Head of House and highly involved in the school’s extensive charitable work. Rebecca Harrison achieved three A*s whilst being Chair of the Torbay Junior League of Friends (supporting Torbay Hospital), one of the only such groups in the country.  Amelia Johnson could not envisage life without History, and so with her 4 A Levels, 3 at A*, she is off to the highly prestigious History course at Exeter University which includes a year abroad. Lily James was one of those students offered an unconditional place by Birmingham University, a growing trend, but she still achieved all A grades, and following her work experience with local MP Kevin Foster, she is going to read Political Science and International Relations.

Head of Sixth Form, Ms Browne, paid tribute to the approach of all the students in the ‘Class of 2018’ saying “We worried for and with them throughout the two years, but had confidence that they would come through…and they really did.’ She added that the figures hide the stories behind the results saying that ‘some of the students had to cope with immense personal issues during these two years and I am particularly pleased for them.’

Headteacher, Dr Smith, commented: “I’m always proud of our results, but these are outstanding; I am fortunate to work in a school where the staff are so dedicated to ensuring our students achieve their aspirations’.
