Medicine and Law conference

Torquay Girls’ Grammar School hosted an inaugural conference for girls in the Torbay area interested in Medicine or Law. Over one hundred and fifty girls from fifteen local schools attended the event which was viewed as an overwhelming success by the organisers.
Girls from Years 10, 11 and 12 with an interest in pursuing these two competitive careers attended talks from a wide range of practitioners.

Those interested in medicine were spoken to by doctors from a range of specialities including surgeons, physicians, general practitioners and psychiatrists.  Students had a chance to try keyhole surgery, use ophthalmoscopes and digital thermometers.

In addition the admissions tutor from the Peninsula Medical School provided invaluable advice on how to make a strong application and three current medical students gave an amusing insight into life at medical school.  Those interested in law followed a parallel programme and were able to talk to a range of practising lawyers.

Dr Smith, Headteacher of Torquay Girls’ Grammar School said, "There appears to be an expectation by universities that applicants for these professions attend a conference like this. Until now, these conferences were all held up country and cost several hundred pounds.  We thought that was unfair on students from the South-West so have arranged our own event that does not incur a fee to those attending.

The considerable response we have had clearly shows that there is a real need for a regular event of this type, and we are looking to repeat the event in the future, as well as putting on similar events for other careers such as teaching, business and the arts.  Our new one hundred and fifty seat lecture theatre provides an excellent venue for such events."
