Head Girl Ceremony at whole school assembly

On Friday we were finally able to formally celebrate the election of our Head Girl team and Heads of Houses with a whole school assembly. Head of House teams were introduced to the full student body and the official handover of the Head Girl jackets took place, as well as the traditional pledge by the Head Girl and Deputy Head. Alicia and Fluer were also presented with their white Head Girl badges by Ms Forster.

Anthony Mangnall MP visits TGGS

On the 1st April, the Sixth Form welcomed Anthony Mangnall, Conservative MP for Totnes and South Devon since 2019, and a member of international trade committee, who is particularly focused on foreign affairs. Mangnall’s past in politics involved being special advisor to then Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns, and previously being a researcher for then Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Politics Speakers Secretary Alice Stephens introduced Mr Mangnall with a speech about his current role and his involvement in the Commons recently. Mangnall started with a short talk about his work as an MP, including his Urgent Question the previous day surrounding the use of rape as a weapon of war in the Ukraine/Russia conflict, and his vote of no confidence letter towards Boris Johnson’s involvement in ‘partygate’.

Students then asked Mangnall a range of questions about themes such as Covid policy, a conversion therapy ban, and the current Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. Mangnall responded respectfully towards a question posed about the PCS Bill’s restrictions on the right to protest and explained his views on the bill, in that parliament should work to find a balance between pressure groups and the government. When asked about his views on the Free School Meals controversy, Mangnall responded honestly, explaining his views and being willing to discuss the issue further when challenged by several in the audience.

We are extremely grateful for Mr Mangnall’s visit, and thoroughly enjoyed talking with him.

Mrs Tania Grigg appointed Head of Sixth Form

We are pleased to announce that Mrs Tania Grigg has been appointed Head of Sixth Form, effective from Easter.

Mrs Grigg has been Head of Geography and Strategic Lead for Teaching & Learning at TGGS since 2017. She began her teaching career teaching in London, but for the past 25 years has been teaching geography in Devon. She has worked in a variety of local schools, most recently as Head of Humanities at Clyst Vale Community College.

In her role as Head of Sixth Form, Mrs Grigg will oversee the academic and pastoral care of all 16-19 students. She is also directly responsible for any student in year 13. Her vision is to lead a sixth form that inspires learning to ensure our students can fulfil their potential and secure brilliant outcomes, giving them the best possible transition into adult life. She firmly believes in offering every opportunity to develop confident, mature and engaging young people who believe in themselves and are ready to embrace their opportunities and challenges as young adults.

Addressing sixth form students, she said "I will look forward to providing the support and the guidance that will enable you to fulfil your goals and ambitions. The chance to lead you makes me enormously proud and I am looking forward to working with all of you to make TGGS Sixth Form the place you want to be, and are proud to be."

When not at work, Mrs Grigg loves making the best use of the Devon countryside and coast for walking with her husband, Mr Grigg, who also teaches geography at TGGS. She also enjoys sewing (especially making quilts) and cooking. Mrs Grigg has two sons, Will who is a trainee Classics teacher and Tom, who is studying medicine
