KS4 Overview

Developing Mathematical thinkers through problem solving and breadth before depth.

Building on KS3 and preparing for KS5…

All content in maths overlaps so we build upon concepts and ideas in KS3 and link them to problem solving and topics that all mix together whilst simultaneously introducing new topics.

KS4 Assessment

Assessment within lessons takes place in a variety of ways. We in Maths use whiteboards, live marking and show calling work to assess understanding within our lessons. We formally assess students once a half term, testing the knowledge learnt more recently as well as recapping content taught previously.

Students also have exam weeks once a year where we in maths assess their calculator and non-calculator knowledge.

KS4 Content

Y10 Content Autumn

Quadratic Equations - used for modelling and linking to topics studied in physics. It is also useful preparation for those students who will go on to study further maths.

Simultaneous Equations - Building on knowledge of linear equations from stage one, the concept of two variables, graphical solving is also used in science.

Combined Events Mutually Exclusive Events

Independent Events and Tree Diagrams

Conditional Probability Venn Diagrams and Set Notation

Growth and Decay

Compound Measures

Y10 Content Spring

Bounds - Using their knowledge of error intervals to allow them to answer upper and lower bounds questions within lots of different contexts.

Trigonometry - This is advancing onto non-right-angled trigonometry, using the sine and cosine rule to calculate missing sides, sides and the area of scalene triangles.

Y10 Content Summer

Data - Looking at cumulative frequency, histograms and box plots and how to compare and analyse data.

Inequalities - Solving both linear and quadratic inequalities

Y11 Content Autumn

Circle Theorems - Introducing the mathematical concept of a theorem and how they are proved.

Algebra - building on skills so that in science and other industries complex formula can be rearranged to find important measures.  Algebraic Fractions - simplifying Algebraic fractions, solving Algebraic Fraction Equations

Surds

Proof

Y11 Content Spring

Vectors - Applying their knowledge of column vectors and what a vector is, to geometric problems.
